    Prof. Kausik Ray

    Prof. Ray is currently president of the European Atherosclerosis Society, chair of the World Heart Federation Roadmap on Cholesterol 2021–2022, chair of the Global Council for Heart Health, national lead for the CVD NIHR Academic Research Collaboration, and clinical director for Health Data Research UK and Discover-NOW Digital Innovation Hub. read more

    He received his medical education (MB ChB) at the University of Birmingham Medical School, his MD at the University of Sheffield, a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, and an MPhil in epidemiology from the University of Cambridge.

    Prof. Ray’s research involves lipids, diabetes and population health, and he serves as global lead for several trials and registries. He leads the international development programme for inclisiran, and is playing a key role in the development programme of bempedoic acid and PCSK9 monoclonal antibodies. He initiated the Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) Studies Collaboration, the only global registry of FH, as well as multinational European registries, such as DA VINCI, HEYMANS and SANTORINI, all of which are helping to shape global health policy.

    Prof. Ray has had >100,000 citations, and since 2018, has been recognized annually by Clarivate Analytics as among the top 0.1% of authors in global medicine.

    Dr. med. Mahir Karakas

    University Medical Center, Hamburg, Germany

    Dr. med. Mahir Karakas is a specialist in cardiology, intensive care medicine, emergency medicine and genetic counselling at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany. In addition, he is the designated W3-Professor for Translational Research and Innovative Clinical Trials at Hamburg University (Else Kröner-Fresenius-Foundation). read more

    After a residency position at the University of Frankfurt, and a research fellowship at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU), Munich, Dr. med. Karakas continued his residency at the University of Ulm from 2009 to 2013. He has been a senior physician/consultant at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf since 2014.

    His research interests include the prevention of cardiovascular disease, biomarkers of cardiometabolic diseases, clinical pharmacology of cardiovascular compounds and animal models of myocardial infarction. He is involved in multiple multicentre clinical trials evaluating the effects of new pharmacologic compounds on cardiometabolic diseases, infectious diseases and sepsis, and heads the steering committee of various investigator-initiated clinical trials in acute coronary syndrome, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, cardiogenic shock, COVID-19, acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis.

    Overview

    In this activity, experts in the management of dyslipidemias and ASCVD respond to questions from the cardiology community on lipid goals for patients with dyslipidemias and at risk of ASCVD. They discuss strategies to reduce ASCVD risk in such patients using appropriate lipid- and lipoprotein-lowering therapies, and important considerations for managing special populations of patients with dyslipidemias.
